About Takis

Takis is a Mexican snack brand built on one idea executed extremely well: take the shape of a traditional taquito, shrink it, roll it tight, and coat it in seasoning bold enough to become a talking point. Takis were created by Barcel — the snacks division of Mexican food giant Grupo Bimbo, founded in 1978 — and first went on sale in Mexico in 1999 under the name Taquis, before being renamed Takis in 2004. The rolled shape is functional as well as recognisable: the tight tube holds far more seasoning per bite than a flat tortilla chip, which is why Takis land harder than their heat rating suggests. Barcel originally aimed the brand at the Hispanic snack market, but it spread rapidly across teens of every background, and social media did the rest — Takis is now sold across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australasia. The brand's tagline, "Are you Takis enough?", sums up the positioning, and Fuego — the chilli-and-lime original in its unmistakable purple bag — remains the best-selling flavour worldwide.

The Takis range we stock

Five 55g Takis flavours, supplied by the box, covering the full heat spectrum from zero to seriously hot.

Variant Heat Profile
Takis Fuego 55g Box Hot The chilli-and-lime original and the brand's best-seller worldwide. Sharp citrus tang up front, chilli heat that builds. The purple bag everyone recognises
Takis Blue Heat 55g Box Hot Hot chilli pepper and lime with a striking blue seasoning coat. Cult status thanks to the colour — the one that gets photographed
Takis Dragon Sweet Chilli 55g Box Medium Sweetness lands first, then a genuine chilli warmth builds behind it. Hotter than the name implies, but the best entry point into the range
Takis Smokin' BBQ 55g Box Mild Deep barbecue smokiness with sweet-savoury notes and barely any heat. The crowd-pleaser for customers who want the crunch without the burn
Takis Intense Nacho 55g Box Zero heat Bold seasoned cheese with tomato and cream notes — sold on flavour intensity rather than spice. Officially a zero-heat flavour

Ingredients and allergens

UK and EU Takis use a different formulation to the US version, so American ingredient lists are not a reliable guide. UK Fuego is built on pre-cooked corn flour and vegetable fat with a chilli and lime flavour seasoning (maltodextrin, salt, flavour enhancers including monosodium glutamate, citric acid, sugar, plant-based colours from paprika extract and beetroot red concentrate, gum arabic and a tocopherol-rich antioxidant), and carries a "may contain milk" advisory. Takis Intense Nacho contains milk as a deliberate ingredient — whey powder, cheese seasoning, milk solids and cream powder — so it is not suitable for anyone dairy-free. Blue Heat, Smokin' BBQ and Dragon Sweet Chilli do not list animal-derived ingredients in their UK formulations, but no Takis flavour is certified vegan and all are produced in facilities that may also handle milk, egg, soya, wheat and peanuts. Takis are not suitable for coeliacs — UK packs carry gluten "may contain" advisories and some formulations list barley gluten outright. All flavours contain MSG. Formulations change between batches and import routes, so always read the back of the individual pack rather than relying on a website listing.

Who Takis is for

Spicy snack chasers: Takis is the reference point for extreme snacking in the UK. Fuego and Blue Heat are what customers arrive searching for by name, and they convert without needing to be sold.

Social-media-led shoppers: Takis has genuine organic reach — the rolled shape, the neon bags and the heat challenges keep it circulating. Blue Heat in particular sells on how it looks as much as how it tastes.

Retailers, vending and meal-deal buyers: the 55g non-price-marked format was introduced specifically for meal deals, vending, travel retail and convenience, giving stronger margin control and promotional flexibility than price-marked packs. Buying by the box is the efficient route in.

Mixed snack box builders: because the range runs from zero heat to hot, you can build a full flight in one brand. Pair with our crisps and snacks range for a broader selection across the box.

Heat-averse customers too: Intense Nacho and Smokin' BBQ mean you are not limited to chilli fans. These are the two to push for family and party trade.

Takis: frequently asked questions

Which Takis flavour is the hottest?

Of the five 55g flavours we stock, Fuego and Blue Heat are the hottest, both rated hot. Fuego leads with lime and chilli; Blue Heat is a hot chilli-lime variant with the distinctive blue coating. Dragon Sweet Chilli sits in the middle with sweetness first and chilli warmth behind. Smokin' BBQ is mild with barely any heat, and Intense Nacho is officially a zero-heat flavour sold on cheese intensity rather than spice. Across the wider Takis range, Nitro — a habanero and lime variant not currently in our line-up — is generally rated hotter than Fuego.

Why are Takis rolled instead of flat?

The shape is modelled on the taquito, a tightly rolled Mexican tortilla, and it was a deliberate design choice rather than a gimmick. The rolled tube gives each piece a much higher surface-area-to-volume ratio than a flat tortilla chip, meaning more seasoning per bite and a denser, harder crunch. It is the main reason Takis feel more intense than their official heat ratings suggest, and why they are noticeably crunchier than puffed snacks like Flamin' Hot Cheetos.

Are UK Takis the same as American Takis?

No. UK and EU Takis are produced to a different specification for Barcel Snacks UK Ltd in Swinton, Mexborough, and Barcel España in Madrid, while US packs come from Barcel USA. The UK formulation typically uses plant-based colours such as paprika extract and beetroot red concentrate in place of the artificial colour lakes used in the US recipe, and the seasoning and preservative systems differ too. Flavour and heat are broadly comparable, but US ingredient and allergen information should never be relied on for UK-sold packs.

Are Takis vegan, vegetarian or halal?

Takis Intense Nacho contains milk and is therefore not vegan. Blue Heat, Smokin' BBQ and Dragon Sweet Chilli do not list animal-derived ingredients in their UK formulations, and UK Fuego listings vary between retailers, so the pack in front of you is what decides it. No Takis flavour carries formal vegan or halal certification. The recipes contain no alcohol or pork-derived ingredients, but without certification we cannot describe them as halal. For formally certified options, see our halal sweets range.

Are Takis gluten free?

No. Although Takis are made from corn rather than wheat, they are not safe for coeliacs. UK packs carry advisories for cereals containing gluten, and some Takis formulations list barley gluten directly in the seasoning. They are also produced in facilities that handle wheat. Anyone with coeliac disease or a diagnosed gluten intolerance should avoid Takis entirely.

What does "Takis" mean?

The snack launched in Mexico in 1999 as "Taquis", a play on taquito, the rolled tortilla the shape is based on. Barcel changed the spelling to "Takis" in 2004 as the brand expanded internationally, giving it a shorter, more distinctive form that travelled better across languages. Barcel has never publicly explained the reasoning behind the exact spelling. The logo's twist over the "i" is a nod to the rolled shape of the chip itself.
