About Doritos
Doritos were created in 1964 by Arch West, an executive at Frito-Lay, inspired by tortilla chips he encountered at Casa de Fritos, a Mexican restaurant in Disneyland. The product launched commercially with the Taco flavour in 1967, with Nacho Cheese added in 1972 (becoming the brand's bestselling flavour globally). Frito-Lay is owned by PepsiCo, making Doritos one of the world's largest crisp/chip brands. The American flavour range is meaningfully different from UK supermarket Doritos , American Cool Ranch (called Cool Original in the UK), Spicy Sweet Chili, Flamin' Hot variants and various limited editions are American specialties.

Ingredients and allergens
Standard Doritos contain corn, vegetable oils (corn, canola or sunflower oil), salt, cheese seasoning blends (containing milk, whey, cheese powders), maltodextrin, monosodium glutamate (MSG), sugar, spices, and natural and artificial flavourings. Contains milk and corn as core allergens. American variants contain different colourings (artificial FD&C colours) than UK variants (which use natural colours to comply with EU hyperactivity warnings). Most cheese-flavoured Doritos are not vegan due to dairy content. Not formally halal certified across the range. The Spicy Sweet Chili and Cool Ranch variants are some of the most allergen-complex Doritos due to seasoning blend complexity. Always check the back of each individual pack for the most accurate allergen and dietary information.

Doritos: frequently asked questions
What's the difference between American and UK Doritos?
American Doritos use different colourings (artificial FD&C colours) than UK Doritos (natural colours to comply with EU regulations). The seasoning blends are also meaningfully different , American Cool Ranch is more pungent than UK Cool Original, and American Nacho Cheese is more intensely cheesy. The American range includes specialties (Spicy Sweet Chili, Flamin' Hot, Mountain Dew flavours, limited editions) that aren't part of UK distribution. American formulations also typically use MSG more openly while UK versions sometimes replace it.
Are Doritos vegan?
Most Doritos flavours contain dairy (milk, whey, cheese powders) and are not vegan. The Lightly Salted variant in the UK is sometimes vegan-suitable. American Cool Ranch contains dairy. Always check the back of each individual pack for the specific dietary status as formulations vary between markets and over time.
Are Doritos gluten-free?
Doritos are made from corn rather than wheat, so the base tortilla chip is naturally gluten-free. However, the seasoning blends may contain wheat-derived ingredients (modified starch, hydrolysed wheat protein), and the production facilities also process wheat products, so cross-contamination is possible. Doritos are not formally labelled as gluten-free. Coeliac shoppers should check labels carefully or consider certified gluten-free alternatives.
Who owns Doritos?
Doritos is owned by Frito-Lay, the snack-food division of PepsiCo. PepsiCo also owns Lay's, Cheetos, Tostitos, Walkers (in the UK), Quaker Oats and many other food brands. The Doritos brand was created in 1964 and has been owned by Frito-Lay (and parent PepsiCo since 1965) continuously since launch.
