About Vita Coco
Vita Coco was founded in 2004 in New York by Mike Kirban and Ira Liran after a chance bar conversation about coconut water. The brand grew through the 2000s and 2010s as coconut water shifted from a niche Asian and Brazilian product to a mainstream wellness drink in Western markets. Vita Coco is now the world's number-one coconut water brand by sales, IPO'd on NASDAQ in 2021. Pure coconut water contains five key electrolytes (potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus) plus naturally-occurring carbohydrates, making it widely used as a post-exercise hydration drink.

Vita Coco Pure contains 100% coconut water with no added sugar, no preservatives, no concentrate. The fruit-blended variants add fruit juice from concentrate (pineapple, peach, mango). Naturally vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and nut-free (despite the name, coconut is botanically a fruit, not a tree nut, though some allergy guidelines treat it as a nut so check with medical advice if you have a tree nut allergy). Contains naturally-occurring sugars from the coconut and added fruit juices. Around 80kcal per 330ml pure variant. Not formally halal certified but contains no obviously haram ingredients. Always check the back of each individual carton for the most accurate allergen and dietary information.

Vita Coco: frequently asked questions
Is coconut water actually good for hydration?
Coconut water contains naturally-occurring electrolytes (potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium) plus carbohydrates, making it a useful hydration drink for low-to-moderate exercise sessions. Research suggests it's broadly comparable to commercial sports drinks for re-hydration after moderate exercise, though sports drinks like Gatorade have higher sodium content which may be better for high-sweat exercise. For everyday hydration, coconut water is a clean alternative to sweeter or more artificial sports drinks.
Is Vita Coco vegan?
Yes. Vita Coco is vegan across the range. Coconut water is entirely plant-derived, and the fruit-blended variants only add plant-based fruit juices. The brand also doesn't use animal-derived processing aids in the production of its coconut water.
How much sugar is in Vita Coco?
Vita Coco Pure contains around 12g of naturally-occurring sugars per 330ml carton, all from the coconut itself with nothing added. The fruit-blended variants (Pineapple, Peach & Mango) have higher sugar content due to the added fruit juice, typically around 15-18g per 330ml. For context, this is meaningfully less than a sugary soda (around 35g per 330ml can) but more than plain water.
Is Vita Coco from real coconuts?
Yes. Vita Coco sources coconuts primarily from Southeast Asia and Brazil, working with local coconut farming cooperatives. The brand publishes sustainability reports detailing its supply chain. The coconut water is extracted from young green coconuts (not the older brown coconuts used for desiccated coconut and coconut milk), which is where the highest water content and best flavour profile sits in the coconut growth cycle.
