About Oreo
Oreo was launched in 1912 by Nabisco in New York as a sandwich cookie with two chocolate biscuits and a sweet cream filling. The biscuit became one of the bestselling cookies in the world. Mondelez International (which spun off from Kraft Foods in 2012) now owns the brand and produces hundreds of flavour variants globally, with most variants only available in their original launch markets. UK supermarkets stock the Original, Golden, Strawberry and a few other variants; imports cover American specialty flavours like Birthday Cake, Mint, Java Chip and limited editions.

Ingredients and allergens
Standard Oreo contains wheat flour, sugar, palm oil, cocoa powder, salt, leavening agents, soy lecithin, chocolate, natural and artificial flavourings, vanillin. Contains wheat (gluten) and soy as core allergens. Most Oreo variants are vegan-suitable (the cream filling is dairy-free, despite the name not making this obvious). Some specialty variants (Peanut Butter especially) contain different allergens including peanuts. Not formally halal certified across the range. The Birthday Cake variant contains additional sprinkles which may contain different colours and ingredients. Always check the back of each individual pack for the most accurate allergen and dietary information.

Vegan-friendly shoppers: most Oreo variants are technically vegan despite not being marketed as such. Suitable for shoppers building a vegan-friendly biscuit selection.
Pick-and-mix dessert builders: Oreo variants work well in dessert recipes including milkshakes, cheesecakes and ice cream. The flavour variants give scope for varied dessert applications.

Oreo: frequently asked questions
Are Oreos vegan?
Most Oreo variants are technically vegan-suitable, including the Original. The cream filling does NOT contain dairy despite seeming creamy, and the chocolate biscuit uses cocoa rather than milk chocolate. However, Mondelez does not actively market Oreo as vegan because the same factory equipment may produce other products containing milk, creating potential cross-contamination. Strict vegan shoppers should check individual labels.
What is the difference between Oreo Mega Stuf and Original?
Oreo Mega Stuf contains roughly three times the cream filling of a standard Oreo (between the two chocolate biscuits), while keeping the same biscuit thickness. Double Stuf has about two times the filling. The variants are American specialties not stocked in UK supermarkets. For cream lovers, Mega Stuf is the most filling-heavy variant available.
Why don't UK supermarkets stock all Oreo flavours?
Mondelez tailors the Oreo range by market based on local consumer testing, distribution costs and regulatory differences. The American specialty flavours (Birthday Cake, Mint, Java Chip, Peanut Butter) were developed for the US market and haven't been launched in UK supermarkets. International variants from Japan, Korea and China (matcha, hojicha, soy sauce flavours and many others) are similarly market-specific. Imports fill the gap for UK shoppers who want access to the global range.
Who owns Oreo?
Oreo is owned by Mondelez International, the multinational food conglomerate spun off from Kraft Foods in 2012. Mondelez also owns Cadbury, Milka, Toblerone, Belvita, Clif Bar (acquired 2022) and Grenade. The brand was originally created by Nabisco in 1912, which became part of Kraft before the Mondelez spin-off.
