Ingredients and allergens

Blackfriars flapjacks contain rolled oats, margarine (palm oil, rapeseed oil, water, salt, emulsifier E475, natural flavourings), partially inverted sugar syrup and sugar. Specific variants add chocolate, fudge pieces, dried fruit, almond essence or yoghurt coating. The bakery also handles egg, milk, nuts, peanuts, sesame, soya and sulphites, so cross-contamination is possible. The range is vegetarian-suitable and HMC halal approved as a category. Vegan and gluten-free options are also available in the broader Blackfriars range. Always check the back of the specific pack for the most accurate allergen and dietary information.

Who Blackfriars is for

Lunchbox and packed-lunch buyers: the individually-wrapped 110g format is ideal for lunchboxes, school packed lunches, office snack drawers and on-the-go eating. The long ambient shelf life (5+ months) means stocking up makes sense.

Halal-certified snack households: Blackfriars is one of the few mainstream UK flapjack brands with formal HMC (Halal Monitoring Committee) approval. The certification appears clearly on pack. Pair with our halal sweets range for a broader halal selection.

Hikers, runners and cyclists: the flapjack is the classic British endurance fuel, delivering slow-release oat energy in a portable format. Blackfriars markets specifically to hikers, runners, climbers and cyclists as outdoor-activity fuel.

British heritage bakery buyers: Blackfriars has been baking in Leicester since 1988 as a family business, which sets it apart from larger industrial flapjack producers. The "made with love in Leicester" positioning resonates with shoppers who actively prefer to support smaller UK independent food brands.

Blackfriars flapjacks: frequently asked questions

Are Blackfriars flapjacks halal?

Yes, Blackfriars flapjacks are HMC (Halal Monitoring Committee) approved. HMC is one of the strictest halal certification bodies in the UK, requiring full traceability of all ingredients and production processes. The halal approval applies to the flapjack range specifically. The HMC logo appears clearly on pack so the certification is easy to verify.

Are Blackfriars flapjacks vegan?

The standard Blackfriars flapjacks are vegetarian-suitable but not all of them are vegan, since some variants (Yoghurt Flapjack, Cookies & Cream) contain dairy. Blackfriars does produce a dedicated vegan oat bar range alongside the standard flapjacks, which uses entirely plant-based ingredients. Always check the back of the specific pack to confirm vegan status.

How long do Blackfriars flapjacks stay fresh?

Blackfriars flapjacks carry a long ambient shelf life, typically 5 months or more from the date of manufacture. Each flapjack is individually wrapped to maintain freshness, so the shelf life applies to unopened bars stored at room temperature. The flapjacks need no refrigeration, which is what makes them suitable for lunchboxes, outdoor activities and long shelf storage.

Where are Blackfriars flapjacks made?

Blackfriars flapjacks are baked at the family-owned bakery in South Wigston, Leicestershire, in the UK. The brand started in 1988 on Blackfriars Street in central Leicester (which is where the name comes from), and grew into the current larger production facility. The bakery is BRCGS-accredited at the highest level, with annual third-party audits.
