About Nestle

Nestlé is the Swiss multinational confectionery and food group founded in 1866 by Henri Nestlé. The company acquired the British confectioner Rowntree's of York in 1988, gaining KitKat (created 1935), Smarties, Aero, Quality Street, Yorkie and Polo. KitKat is now produced globally by Nestlé except in the United States, where it remains made under licence by Hershey through an agreement first signed in 1970. The brand brings British chocolate heritage together with global Swiss manufacturing reach.

Ingredients and allergens

Standard KitKat Chunky ingredients include sugar, vegetable fats (palm, shea), wheat flour, skimmed milk powder, cocoa butter, cocoa mass, whey powder, glucose syrup, fat-reduced cocoa powder, butterfat, rice flour, sunflower oil, emulsifier (lecithins), raising agent (sodium bicarbonate), and natural flavouring. Most Nestle chocolate variants contain milk and wheat (gluten) as core ingredients. KitKat Dark is the notable exception, being suitable for vegans. Made in facilities that also handle nuts and soya. Not formally halal certified across the range. Always check the back of each individual pack for the most accurate allergen and dietary information.

Who Nestle is for

British chocolate fans: Nestle owns most of the household-name British chocolate brands through the 1988 Rowntree's acquisition. KitKat, Smarties, Aero, Yorkie and Quality Street collectively define what most British shoppers think of as everyday chocolate.

KitKat variety hunters: the Chunky range goes beyond the standard supermarket 4-finger format into single-bar variants like Peanut Butter and Double Chocolate that aren't always reliably stocked at smaller UK retailers.

Vegan chocolate buyers: KitKat Dark is one of the rare mainstream UK chocolate bars formally suitable for vegans, with no milk or animal-derived ingredients. Pair with our vegan sweets range for a broader vegan-friendly selection.

Gift and Christmas buyers: the Quality Street 220g tin format is one of Britain's most-bought Christmas chocolate gifts. Pair with our gift boxes for hamper-building selections.

Nestle chocolate: frequently asked questions

Are KitKat bars vegetarian?

Yes, standard KitKat bars are vegetarian-suitable. The recipe contains milk, wheat and cocoa with no gelatine or other animal-derived ingredients. KitKat Dark goes further and is suitable for vegans (no milk in the dark variant). Always check the back of the specific pack since recipes can vary slightly by region.

Why are American KitKats made by Hershey but UK KitKats made by Nestle?

KitKat is produced globally by Nestle except in the United States, where it has been made under licence by Hershey since 1970, well before Nestle acquired Rowntree's in 1988. The Hershey licence pre-dates Nestle's ownership and remains in place today, which is why American KitKats have a different recipe and taste than UK or European KitKats. Our imports are the UK Nestle versions.

When did Nestle acquire KitKat?

Nestle acquired KitKat as part of its takeover of the British confectioner Rowntree's in 1988. Rowntree's had created KitKat in September 1935 in York, England, and held the brand for 53 years before the acquisition. Since 1988, all KitKats outside the US have been produced under Nestle ownership, while the Hershey licence remains in place for American production.

Are Smarties halal?

Nestle Smarties are not formally halal certified, though they contain no obvious haram ingredients in the recipe (no pork-derived gelatine, no alcohol). Most Muslim shoppers consider them suitable, but Nestle does not display a halal certification mark on UK packaging. For formally halal-certified chocolate alternatives, see our Cluck-O-Late and Feastables ranges.
