About Milka

Milka is the iconic European Alpine milk chocolate brand, registered as a trademark in 1901 and now owned by Mondelez International. The signature lilac packaging and the Milka cow mascot are recognised across European supermarkets, and the chocolate itself uses Alpine cow's milk for a smoother, creamier flavour profile than most UK chocolate. The UK range covers classic bars, Oreo and Daim collaborations, and seasonal limited editions.

What makes Milka different to UK chocolate

Three things, mainly. First, the Alpine milk: Milka has used only 100% Alpine-sourced milk since launch, and at minimum 18% milk solids in the base Alpine Milk chocolate. The dairy content is higher than UK retail chocolate equivalents at the same price point, which is part of what gives Milka its distinctly creamier, less-sweet finish. Second, the recipe is European rather than British, meaning fewer cocoa solids and more milk and sugar than a typical Cadbury Dairy Milk bar, with a smoother mouthfeel and a softer melt. Third, the flavour range includes European-market variants that don't reach UK supermarkets in volume: Tuc and Lu in particular are sweet-and-salty hybrid bars that have no direct British equivalent.

Worth noting: Milka and Cadbury are owned by the same parent company (Mondelez International), but the chocolate is produced on separate lines with separate recipes. They taste meaningfully different, which is why both brands continue to exist as distinct lines under the Mondelez umbrella rather than being merged.

The 9 Milka chocolate bars we stock

All nine bars in their standard tablet format. Each has a distinct flavour profile or filling, all built on the same Alpine milk base.

Bar Profile
Alpine Milk The original recipe. Smooth milk chocolate with 30% cocoa solids and 100% Alpine milk. Minimum 18% milk solids
Hazelnut Alpine milk chocolate with whole roasted hazelnuts embedded throughout. Roughly 10% hazelnut content
Caramel Filled bar with a soft caramel centre wrapped in Alpine milk chocolate. Sweeter than the Alpine Milk base
Strawberry Alpine milk chocolate with a strawberry yoghurt-style filling. The pink-centred Milka most associated with Easter and Valentine's gifting
White White chocolate version using Alpine milk and cocoa butter rather than cocoa solids. Lighter and sweeter than the milk variants
Oreo Alpine milk chocolate with Oreo cookie pieces embedded. Both brands owned by Mondelez, so the partnership is natural
Oreo Sandwich The premium Oreo variant: a full Oreo biscuit sandwiched between layers of Milka Alpine milk chocolate. Heavier and more textured than the standard Oreo bar
Tuc Alpine milk chocolate over Tuc savoury crackers. The Mondelez sweet-and-salty hybrid: chocolate meets the iconic Tuc biscuit
Lu Alpine milk chocolate with LU biscuit pieces (another Mondelez biscuit brand). Lighter texture than the Oreo Sandwich

Ingredients and allergens

Standard ingredient list for Milka Alpine Milk, representative of the base recipe:

Sugar, cocoa butter, cocoa mass, skimmed MILK powder, whey powder (from MILK), MILK fat, emulsifier (SOYA lecithins), HAZELNUT paste, flavouring. Cocoa solids: 33% minimum. Milk solids: 18% minimum. MAY CONTAIN OTHER NUTS AND WHEAT.

Allergens across the range: contains milk and soya as direct ingredients in all products. The Tuc, Lu, Oreo and Oreo Sandwich variants also contain wheat from the biscuit components. The Hazelnut variant contains hazelnut as a direct ingredient. May contain traces of other nuts due to shared production. All Milka bars are vegetarian (no animal-derived ingredients beyond dairy). Milka is not currently halal certified in the UK, and Mondelez does not provide formal halal certification across the range. The recipe is gluten-containing for the biscuit variants and gluten-free for the plain milk and white variants, although formal gluten-free certification is not provided.

Who Milka is for

European chocolate palates: if you've travelled in Germany, Austria, France or Switzerland and bought Milka there, the bars stocked here are the same recipe. The European chocolate profile is creamier and less cocoa-forward than the British equivalent at the same price point.

Cadbury cross-shoppers wanting variety: Mondelez owns both brands, so if you're already buying Cadbury and want to widen the chocolate drawer with a different recipe from the same group, Milka is the obvious step. The Oreo and Oreo Sandwich variants in particular show the Mondelez brand-crossover strategy at work.

Sweet-and-salty hybrid fans: the Tuc and Lu variants are genuinely hard to find in UK supermarkets and represent a flavour category that British retail chocolate barely covers. If you've tried Cadbury Dairy Milk with Lu and want the actual Milka version, this is it.

Gifting buyers: the lilac packaging, the distinctive cow mascot and the European positioning make Milka a popular gifting choice. The Strawberry, Caramel and Oreo Sandwich variants in particular work as part of a chocolate-themed gift basket from our chocolate range.

Vegetarian chocolate fans: the recipe is vegetarian-suitable across the range (dairy ingredients but no rennet, no gelatine, no animal-derived emulsifiers). Strict vegans should look elsewhere because of the dairy content.

Buy Milka chocolate online in the UK

All 9 Milka bars stocked in their standard tablet format. UK supermarkets typically carry the Alpine Milk and Oreo variants on a permanent basis, with Strawberry and Caramel appearing seasonally. The deeper European range (Tuc, Lu, Oreo Sandwich, White) is rarely on supermarket shelves and is most reliably bought through specialist importers. Build the basket past £20 to qualify for free UK delivery. Mix bars across the milk, filled and biscuit variants to make a Milka tasting set. Orders placed before our daily cut-off are dispatched the same working day.

Milka chocolate UK: frequently asked questions

Where is Milka chocolate made?

Milka is produced primarily in Germany and Austria today, with milk sourced from family-run dairy farms in the Alpine region (the area around the Alps spanning Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy). The brand was originally founded in Switzerland in 1901 by Philippe Suchard's chocolate company and is now owned by Mondelez International, the same parent company that owns Cadbury, Oreo and Toblerone.

Is Milka chocolate vegetarian?

Yes. All Milka bars in our range are suitable for vegetarians. The recipe contains dairy ingredients (milk, whey, milk fat) and soya lecithin as an emulsifier, but no animal-derived ingredients beyond dairy: no gelatine, no rennet, no animal-derived emulsifiers. Strict vegans should look elsewhere because of the dairy content. The biscuit variants (Tuc, Lu, Oreo, Oreo Sandwich) also contain wheat, so are not suitable for coeliacs.

Is Milka halal?

Milka is not currently halal certified in the UK. The recipe does not contain pork or alcohol as direct ingredients, but Mondelez does not provide formal halal certification on UK packaging. Halal-keeping shoppers who require certified labels may prefer Cadbury (same parent company, certain markets carry halal certification) or our halal sweets range. Always check the individual bag for the most current dietary information.

What's the difference between Milka and Cadbury?

Milka and Cadbury are both owned by Mondelez International but are produced on separate lines with separate recipes for different markets. Milka uses 100% Alpine milk with a higher milk solids content (18% minimum in the Alpine Milk recipe), giving it a creamier, less cocoa-forward flavour. Cadbury Dairy Milk uses British milk and a recipe optimised for UK consumer palates, which tends to be sweeter and slightly more cocoa-forward than Milka. Both brands continue to exist as distinct lines because they're calibrated for different regional preferences.

What is Tuc and Lu in Milka chocolate bars?

Tuc and Lu are both Mondelez-owned biscuit brands embedded into Milka chocolate bars. Tuc is a sweet-and-salty cracker originally from Belgium, and the Milka Tuc bar layers Alpine milk chocolate over Tuc cracker pieces for a sweet-meets-salty profile. Lu (Le Petit-Beurre) is a French butter biscuit, and Milka Lu embeds LU biscuit pieces in the Alpine milk chocolate. Both bars are popular across continental Europe but rarely stocked in UK supermarkets.

Where else can I buy Milka chocolate in the UK?

Milka has UK supermarket distribution at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons and Waitrose, but the range stocked is usually limited to the Alpine Milk and Oreo variants on a permanent basis, with Strawberry and Caramel appearing seasonally. The deeper European range (Tuc, Lu, Oreo Sandwich, White) is rarely on supermarket shelves and tends to move through specialist European food importers and online retailers like us. Amazon also stocks the wider range via third-party sellers.
