About Cheetos
Cheetos is the American cheese puff brand invented in 1948 by Charles Elmer Doolin (creator of Fritos) at his Frito Company headquarters in San Antonio, Texas. The brand's success drove the 1961 merger of The Frito Company with H.W. Lay & Company to form Frito-Lay, which became a subsidiary of PepsiCo in 1965. Flamin' Hot Cheetos launched nationally in 1992 and now sits as the brand's second-bestselling product after the original Crunchy. The Chester Cheetah character has been the brand mascot since 1986.

Ingredients and allergens
Cheetos products are made from enriched cornmeal, vegetable oils (corn, canola, sunflower), cheese seasoning (whey, cheddar cheese, salt), buttermilk, natural and artificial flavours, and various food colours. Flamin' Hot variants contain additional spices, chilli pepper extract and Red 40 colouring. Most Cheetos products are gluten-free (corn-based, not wheat) but contain milk from the cheese coating, so are not vegan, dairy-free or formally halal certified. Made in facilities that may handle soy. The American Cheetos imports use different colours and seasonings than European versions. Always check the back of each individual pack.
Who Cheetos is for
American snack import buyers: the Flamin' Hot variants in particular don't have full UK retail distribution, making Cheetos a core American import for shoppers chasing flavours unavailable through Tesco or Asda.
Flamin' Hot fans: the Flamin' Hot Cheetos line is one of the most-recognised spicy snacks in the world, with cultural reach extending into music videos, TikTok challenges and a 2023 Eva Longoria biopic about creator Richard Montañez. The XXTRA Flamin' Hot pushes the heat further still.
Pick-and-mix snack buyers: the six different Cheetos variants give flexibility for building American snack selections. Pair with our Herr's cheese curls and Lay's imported flavours for a broader American crunch selection.
Gluten-free snackers: the cornmeal base means most Cheetos products are naturally gluten-free, giving them a meaningful advantage over wheat-based crisps for coeliac and gluten-avoidant households. The milk content means they are not vegan, however.

Cheetos: frequently asked questions
How spicy are Flamin' Hot Cheetos?
Flamin' Hot Cheetos sit at a moderate-to-strong heat level, hot enough to be noticeably spicy but accessible to most chilli fans. The XXTRA Flamin' Hot variant pushes the heat substantially further. For comparison, Flamin' Hot is meaningfully hotter than most Doritos or Walkers Hot flavours, but milder than Herr's Carolina Reaper Cheese Curls or Buldak Hot Chicken Ramen.
Are Cheetos vegetarian or halal?
Most Cheetos products are vegetarian-suitable (the recipe contains no meat-derived ingredients) but contain milk and cheese from the dairy coating, so they are not vegan or dairy-free. The brand is not formally halal certified across the range. Recipes vary by region: American Cheetos use different colourings (often including Red 40) than European versions. Always check the back of the specific imported pack.
Are American Cheetos different from European Cheetos?
Yes. American Cheetos use different colourings, flavour intensities and ingredient lists compared to the European versions (which are also produced by Frito-Lay through European factories). The American versions are often more intensely flavoured, use brighter orange colouring and include flavours like Flamin' Hot and XXTRA Flamin' Hot that aren't reliably stocked in UK supermarkets. Our imports are the American versions.
Who invented Flamin' Hot Cheetos?
The Flamin' Hot Cheetos creation story is contested. Richard Montañez, a Mexican-American Frito-Lay janitor turned executive, has long claimed to have invented the product by inspiration from Mexican elote street corn. Frito-Lay's official records credit a team led by executive Lynne Greenfeld at the Texas headquarters in 1989. Both versions have appeared in media. The product launched nationally in 1992 and is now the brand's second-bestselling line behind Crunchy Cheetos.
