About Samyang
Samyang Foods Co., Ltd. was established in South Korea in 1961, making it one of the country's oldest instant noodle manufacturers. The brand transformed globally with the launch of Buldak Hot Chicken Flavor Ramen in April 2012, inspired by a spicy chicken stir-fry dish observed by Samyang sales-team member Kim Jung-soo at a restaurant in 2010. The product became a cultural phenomenon when the "Fire Noodle Challenge" went viral on YouTube in the mid-2010s, with viewers around the world filming themselves attempting the noodles. The original Buldak measures 4,404 Scoville Heat Units, the 2X Spicy version doubles that, and the 3X Spicy variant is one of the spiciest mainstream instant noodles available worldwide. Samyang has since expanded the Buldak brand beyond noodles into sauces, chips, tteokbokki and dumplings.

Ingredients and allergens
Standard Buldak Original ingredients include wheat flour, modified food starch, palm oil, wheat gluten, salt, glycerin, soy lecithin, polyglycerol esters of fatty acids, potassium carbonate, sodium carbonate, sodium phosphate dibasic, guar gum, tocopherols, riboflavin (colour), plus the separate sauce packet containing soy sauce, sugar, chilli pepper, garlic, onion and other seasonings. Contains wheat (gluten) and soy as core allergens. The Carbonara, Cheese and Quattro Cheese variants contain milk. Not vegan (contains animal-derived ingredients in the sauce packets). Some export variants carry halal certification (look for the halal mark on the back of the pack) but not the full range. The chilli intensity in the 2X and 3X Spicy versions can trigger heartburn, stomach pain or chilli-burn skin sensitivity in some consumers. Always check the back of each individual pack for the most accurate allergen and dietary information.
Who Samyang is for
Spicy food challenge fans: the 2X and 3X Spicy variants are the global benchmark for the Fire Noodle Challenge, with millions of YouTube and TikTok videos featuring shoppers attempting them. For chilli-tolerance challengers, these are the standard test.
Korean food enthusiasts: Buldak captures the Korean stir-fried noodle (bokkeum-myeon) style, drained-and-stirred with intense sauce rather than served in broth like ramyun. The Carbonara, Rose and Jjajang variants showcase Korean-Italian and Korean-Chinese fusion flavours common in modern Korean food culture.
Cream-tempered heat seekers: the Carbonara, Cheese, Quattro Cheese and Rose variants deliver the Buldak experience with cream or cheese balancing the chilli, making them accessible for shoppers who want the brand experience without the maximum heat of the original.
Korean snack and noodle pick-and-mix builders: Buldak pairs well with broader Korean import food selections. Pair with our Indian snacks range for shoppers building Asian spicy-snack selections.

Samyang Buldak ramen: frequently asked questions
How spicy is Samyang Buldak ramen?
Standard Buldak Original measures around 4,404 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). For reference, a jalapeño pepper sits around 2,500-8,000 SHU, so the original Buldak is in the same range as a moderately spicy fresh chilli. The 2X Spicy variant doubles that intensity to around 8,800 SHU. The 3X Spicy variant pushes well above 12,000 SHU, putting it firmly in the cayenne-pepper territory. For comparison, Herr's Carolina Reaper Cheese Curls use chilli rated at 1.5 to 2.2 million SHU, so the very hottest Buldak is still meaningfully milder than extreme-heat snacks.
Is Samyang Buldak halal?
Some Samyang Buldak variants are halal-certified for export markets (particularly the Original, Cheese, Carbonara and 2X Spicy variants in their export packs), but not the entire range and not consistently across batches. Look for the halal certification mark on the back of the specific pack you're buying. For formally halal-certified Asian food options, see our wider halal range and Mogu Mogu Thai drinks which are fully halal certified.
How do you make Samyang Buldak?
Buldak is stir-fried rather than boiled in soup. Boil the noodles in water for around 5 minutes, drain most of the water (leave about 8 tablespoons in the pan), then add the spicy sauce packet plus the sesame and seaweed flake topping, stir-fry for about 30 seconds over medium heat, and serve. The result is a dry, sauce-coated noodle dish rather than a broth-based ramen. Adding cheese, a fried egg or milk on the side helps balance the heat for the spicier variants.
What is the Fire Noodle Challenge?
The Fire Noodle Challenge is a viral YouTube and TikTok phenomenon where participants film themselves eating a full pack of Samyang Buldak Hot Chicken Ramen (typically the 2X Spicy variant) without water, milk or cooling food. The challenge surged in popularity from 2014 onward and is widely credited with driving Buldak's global breakout from a regional Korean product to a worldwide cult brand. Samyang has actively embraced the challenge as marketing, even producing the 3X Spicy variant as a deliberate challenge-level intensity.
