Why the square? A bit about Ritter Sport
Alfred and Clara Ritter founded the company in 1912, and the famous square bar came in 1932 from Clara, who wanted a bar that slipped into a sports jacket pocket without snapping yet weighed the same as a longer one. That is where the name and the square come from, along with the slogan every German knows: quadratisch, praktisch, gut, or square, practical, good. The company has stayed in the same family in Waldenbuch for more than a hundred years, sources its own cocoa and still puts real work into sustainability, which is part of why a Ritter Sport square costs a little more than a bargain bar. Buy in bulk and the cost per bar drops while the cupboard stays full.
Ritter Sport FAQ
Why is it called Ritter Sport?
The name dates back to 1932, when Clara Ritter designed a square bar that would fit in a sports jacket pocket without breaking. It was first sold as Ritter's Sport Schokolade, and the square shape and the sport name have remained ever since.
Is Ritter Sport chocolate made in Germany?
Yes. All Ritter Sport bars are made by Alfred Ritter GmbH in Waldenbuch, near Stuttgart, where the family-owned firm has produced its square chocolate since the early days.
Which Ritter Sport flavours can I buy here?
Right now we stock Pistachio, Dark Whole Hazelnuts, Crispy Chocolate, the sweet and salty Groovy pretzel bar, the Funky white and lemon bar, and the limited-edition Ritter Sport and Haribo Balla Bites bar, each of which is sold as a box of 100g squares.
Why is Ritter Sport sold by the box, and is it good value?
These 100g bars come in boxes of ten to twelve because it works out cheaper than buying them singly, and you do not have to reorder every week. It is German chocolate made with sustainably sourced cocoa, so a box is an excellent treat and a popular choice for gifts, offices and parties.
Do you deliver Ritter Sport across the UK?
We do. Every box ships fresh from our Birmingham base to anywhere in the UK, just like the rest of the shop.
