Milk Duds were created in 1928 by F Hoffman & Company in Chicago. The "dud" name came from the original production attempt to make perfectly round chocolate-covered caramels , the irregular shape was a manufacturing limitation that became part of the brand's character. The brand passed through multiple owners (M.J. Holloway, Beatrice Foods, Leaf) before The Hershey Company acquired it in 1996.
